Nutritional grouping of marine forage species reveals contrasted exposure of high trophic levels to essential micro‐nutrients

By transferring energy and nutrients from plankton to top predators, forage species play a major ecological role in marine food webs. While large differences densities have been demonstrated among these species, other determinants of their quality remain poorly explored. We analysed 78 the Bay Biscay, NE Atlantic, for concentrations various chemical elements with documented biological (i.e. micro-nutrients). Species encompassed jellyfish, crustaceans, cephalopods, cartilaginous bony fish. Elements included two essential macro-minerals (nitrogen phosphorous) nine trace (arsenic (As), cobalt, copper (Cu), chromium, iron, manganese, nickel, selenium (Se), zinc). showed broad range elemental composition values across partly driven by taxonomy (fish versus crustaceans/cephalopods) or habitat (coastal oceanic, pelagic benthic). Some (As, Cu Se) were more variable than others, especially fish Se. The then classified hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) into different nutritional groups, based on eleven elements. Mean each element diet eight cetacean was finally calculated, as well importance group (as defined HCA including all elements) predator species. revealed contrasting diets terms exposure Neritic common dolphins harbour porpoises but also minke whales thus mainly supplied Se-enriched composed small (pelagic) schooling (including sandeels, (horse) mackerel some Clupeids), while pilot Risso's that mostly consume benthic cephalopods clearly Cu-enriched.
